AHS launched a $32M physician retention program providing up to $80,000 in clinical incentives for doctors committing to rural hospitals across northern and central Alberta.
EDMONTON, AB — Alberta Health Services (AHS) and the Ministry of Health announced the rollout of a $32-million Rural Emergency Clinical Retention Grant on Saturday morning, addressing persistent staffing shortages that have forced temporary emergency department closures in rural communities.
The program offers practicing family physicians and emergency medicine specialists up to $80,000 in retention bonuses over three years in exchange for committing to maintain on-call emergency room coverage in designated rural hospitals. Tier 1 priority zones include High Level, Fort Vermilion, Edson, St. Paul, and Rocky Mountain House, where emergency services have experienced weekend disruptions.
AHS is also expanding locum travel coverage and providing enhanced medical liability subsidies to reduce overhead costs for independent rural practitioners.

Physician grant applications opened immediately on Saturday through the AHS medical affairs portal, with initial funding disbursements scheduled for September 15.
