B.C. Expands Transit-Oriented Density Housing Mandates Around SkyTrain Stations

VANCOUVER, B.C. — The British Columbia government has formally designated 12 additional transit-oriented areas (TOAs) across the Lower Mainland, requiring municipalities to permit high-density residential towers within 800 metres of major transit stations.

Unlocking Housing Near Rapid Transit

Premier David Eby and Housing Minister Ravi Kahlon highlighted that building homes adjacent to transit reduces commuting times and strengthens community vitality.

"People want to live close to transit, shops, and services," said Premier Eby. "These rules ensure that taxpayers' multi-billion dollar transit investments are matched with housing people can actually afford."

Municipal Coordination

Local zoning bylaws must be harmonized with provincial minimum density targets within 90 days.
