B.C. Government Deploys Transition Taskforce Following Sunshine Coast Pulp Mill Curtailment

PORT MELLON, BC — The Government of British Columbia announced the immediate deployment of a provincial Community Transition Taskforce Friday to support workers and local businesses affected by the permanent curtailment of pulp operations on the Sunshine Coast.

Economic Impact on Coastal Communities

The industrial shutdown at the historic facility impacts approximately 350 direct unionized employees and over 800 indirect forestry and logistics contractors across Gibsons, Sechelt, and Howe Sound communities.

"The workers at Port Mellon have powered this coast for generations," Premier David Eby stated. "Our government will ensure workers receive bridged pension supports, direct retraining allowances, and municipal revenue stabilization so families are supported through this transition."

Forestry Sector Restructuring

Minister of Forests Bruce Ralston confirmed that the Ministry will coordinate with local First Nations and municipal councils to explore potential site redevelopment for green hydrogen production, specialized mass timber manufacturing, and clean port logistics.
