WASHINGTON, DC — The White House and the Department of the Interior announced the allocation of $310 million in federal infrastructure grants Thursday afternoon, funding 62 drinking water, wastewater treatment, and aquifer reclamation projects across rural municipalities and Tribal nations in fourteen states.
Funded through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Indian Water Rights Settlement accounts, the grants provide dedicated capital for deep groundwater well replacements, arsenic filtration plants, and modern wastewater reclamation hubs in rural Arizona, New Mexico, Montana, and the Dakotas. The projects eliminate chronic boil-water advisories and ensure reliable, clean water access for more than 180,000 rural residents and Tribal members.
Interior Secretary officials emphasized that guaranteed clean water infrastructure is essential for public health, regional economic stability, and fulfilling federal treaty trust obligations.
Rural utility districts and Tribal council chairs praised the direct federal matching grants, noting that small rural tax bases cannot independently fund modern water treatment facilities.
The Bureau of Reclamation confirmed that all approved engineering designs incorporate energy-efficient solar pumping and climate-resilient water storage capacity.
Initial pipeline trenching and water treatment facility construction will commence across approved Tribal and municipal sites in October 2026.
