B.C. Extends Provincial State of Emergency Unlocking Extraordinary Wildfire Powers and Relief

VICTORIA, BC — Premier David Eby and Minister of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness Bowinn Ma issued an Order in Council extending British Columbia's declaration of a provincial State of Emergency through August 29, 2026.

Retaining Rapid Coordinated Powers to Defend Communities

The extension ensures provincial wildfire authorities maintain extraordinary legal powers under the Emergency and Disaster Management Act to secure temporary land access, issue binding evacuation orders, coordinate heavy civil machinery deployments, and secure temporary commercial hotel lodging for displaced residents in Summerland and Peachland. The province also confirmed the approval of a formal Request for Federal Assistance (RFA), mobilizing federal accommodation logistics and Canadian Armed Forces logistical support.

Premier Eby affirmed that while thousands of firefighters battle intense fires on the front lines, the province will ensure every community has immediate, unconstrained access to life-saving emergency equipment and shelter.

First Nations and Regional District Coordination

Okanagan Nation Alliance leadership worked directly with provincial incident commanders to establish culturally sensitive evacuation reception centers.

BC Wildfire Service deployed high-capacity water delivery sprinkler trailers to protect residential subdivisions.

Legal Duration

The extended State of Emergency remains in active legal effect through August 29, 2026, subject to further extension.
