State Senator Aisha Wahab won the special election for California's 15th Congressional District, succeeding Eric Swalwell and strengthening the progressive caucus in Washington.

HAYWARD, CA — Alameda County and Contra Costa County election boards completed the final ballot certification on Sunday morning for the special election in California's 15th Congressional District, confirming Democratic State Senator Aisha Wahab as the district's new representative in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Wahab secured 54.2% of the vote in the East Bay district, prevailing over moderate challenger and former municipal official Peter Kuo. The vacancy arose following former Representative Eric Swalwell's transition to a national campaign role.
The race drew national attention and significant independent expenditure spending, with progressive grassroots networks mobilizing intensive canvassing operations to overcome outside political action committee advertising.
In her victory statement in Hayward, Representative-elect Wahab pledged to champion federal housing affordability legislation, expand consumer protections on artificial intelligence and algorithmic pricing, and support healthcare access for working families.
Progressive Congressional leaders, including members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, congratulated Wahab on her victory, noting that her municipal and state legislative record brings deep experience in tenant protections and labor rights.
Representative-elect Wahab is scheduled to be formally sworn in by House Speaker Mike Johnson when the House of Representatives reconvenes on September 9, 2026.
Civil rights coalitions and state election officials filed emergency petitions against a new USPS administrative rule altering ballot postmarking guidelines ahead of the 2026 midterms.

City Clerk officials in Sault Ste. Marie announce candidate filing procedures ahead of the August 21 nomination deadline, preparing for statutory Municipal Act restricted acts rules.
