Federal Cabinet Permanently Extends Maximum $4,200 Canada Student Grants for Post-Secondary Education

OTTAWA, ON — Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) announced that the enhanced Canada Student Grants program providing up to $4,200 annually in non-repayable financial aid for full-time students has been officially finalized for the 2026–2027 post-secondary academic year.

Supporting 600,000 Canadian Students with Direct Grants

The funding measure ensures approximately 600,000 college and university students from low- and middle-income families receive upfront non-repayable grants to cover tuition, books, and living expenses, paired with the permanent interest-free status on Canada Student Loans. ESDC also renewed the $2,800 annual grant allocation for part-time students and students with dependents.

Federal ministers highlighted that eliminating post-secondary financial barriers ensures Canada develops the skilled workforce required for high-tech, healthcare, and engineering sectors.

Student Union and University Leadership Support

The Canadian Federation of Students and Universities Canada commended the grant certainty, emphasizing that upfront grants prevent long-term student debt accumulation.

Provincial student aid agencies have updated automated assessment calculators ahead of September semester disbursements.

Fall Disbursement Schedule

Direct electronic grant deposits to registered student bank accounts will commence the first week of September 2026.
