TORONTO, Ont. — Premier Doug Ford announced Ontario's new "Data Centre Playbook" on Thursday, establishing a standardized provincial framework designed to regulate power consumption, grid reliability, and data residency protections for artificial intelligence computing facilities.
Under the new guidelines, major data centre operators must coordinate power demands directly with the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) and invest in dedicated on-site power generation and efficiency standards during peak grid hours.
"Ontario is open for high-tech innovation, but our grid must remain affordable for regular families and small businesses," Ford stated at Queen's Park.
The framework provides clarity for technology developers while ensuring the province retains regulatory authority over large industrial loads.
