House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries demanded congressional oversight hearings into how 50% tariffs on Canadian lumber and agricultural products will increase grocery and housing expenses.

WASHINGTON, DC — House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries called upon House committee leadership on Sunday afternoon to schedule emergency oversight hearings on the economic consequences of new 50% tariffs on Canadian imports, warning that the measures will reignite inflation for working families.
In a formal letter to the House Committees on Ways and Means and Small Business, Leader Jeffries cited independent economic analyses showing that blanket tariffs on Canadian softwood lumber, building supplies, and agricultural commodities will add up to $14,000 to the cost of constructing a new single-family home in the United States and inflate retail grocery prices.
"Imposing erratic and massive tariffs on our closest trading partner and ally is an economic self-inflicted wound," Jeffries stated during a press briefing in Brooklyn. "Working families in New York, the Midwest, and across this country should not be forced to pay higher prices for groceries and building materials because of reckless trade warfare."
Jeffries highlighted that thousands of small manufacturing businesses in border states rely on daily intermediate goods shipments from Ontario and Quebec. Imposing sudden tariff costs without transition periods risks triggering layoffs across domestic fabrication shops and regional logistics firms.
Democratic leaders urged the administration to engage in structured multilateral trade dispute mechanisms rather than unilateral executive tariff declarations.
Jeffries requested that the House Ways and Means Committee convene an emergency field hearing in a northern border district within two weeks.
John Thune convened Senate Agriculture Committee leaders to craft emergency agricultural export mitigation amendments ahead of Canadian retaliatory tariffs.

Mark Carney stated Canada will not compromise on French language protections or independent international trade agreements in response to aggressive American tariff demands.

House Speaker Mike Johnson signaled that House Republicans will condition fall continuing resolutions on mandatory border funding and non-defense spending reductions.
