WINNIPEG, MB — The Manitoba Department of Health, Seniors and Long-Term Care released its quarterly clinical workforce census Thursday morning, confirming a net addition of 4,725 healthcare professionals across the province’s five regional health authorities since the launch of the Health Human Resources Action Plan in late 2023.
The audited figures detail a net increase of 1,840 registered nurses, 412 licensed practical nurses, 285 medical doctors, and over 2,100 allied health workers and healthcare aides. Retention incentives, expanded nursing training seats at the University of Manitoba and Red River College, and streamlined licensure for internationally educated nurses accounted for the significant workforce stabilization.
Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara noted that mandatory overtime hours among emergency department nurses dropped by 31 percent year-over-year.
Rural health authorities, including Prairie Mountain Health and Interlake-Eastern, received 38 percent of all new permanent placements, enabling regional facilities in Dauphin, Selkirk, and The Pas to stabilize weekend emergency coverage and reduce temporary bed closures.
The Manitoba Nurses Union commended the milestone while urging continued investment in workplace safety and clinical mentorship programs for junior staff.
