MEDICINE HAT, AB — Medicine Hat City Council highlighted community civic initiatives Thursday afternoon, approving a directive to the municipal Parks and Recreation Department to draft updated accessibility frameworks and fee subsidy models for local community recreation facilities.
Following extensive community engagement during the hosting of regional summer sports exhibitions, Councillor Brian Varga and committee members requested administration to present options for expanding the Fair Entry recreation assistance program. The initiative aims to lower user fee barriers for lower-income youth, seniors, and individuals with disabilities utilizing the Big Marble Go Centre and municipal ice arenas.
The council directive also allocates $75,000 from the municipal Community Vibrancy Grant reserve to support grassroots athletic clubs and volunteer coaching certifications across southeastern Alberta.
City Council formally recognized over 300 local volunteers who contributed to regional athletic tournaments, emphasizing that accessible civic sports infrastructure fosters youth development and healthy community living.
