TORONTO, ON — Metrolinx finalized a $74-million signaling and rail traffic control contract on Saturday, marking a crucial step forward in the broader GO Expansion modernization program across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA).
The contract awards the supply and installation of an advanced European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) and Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) overlay across 85 kilometres of track on the Lakeshore West and Lakeshore East corridors between Oakville and Oshawa.
The digital signaling architecture replaces legacy wayside block signals with continuous radio-based train tracking, permitting shorter headways between trains and laying the technical groundwork for 15-minute, all-day two-way electric passenger rail service.
The automated signaling system incorporates positive train control (PTC) automatic braking and speed enforcement, significantly enhancing passenger safety and eliminating signal-related delays that have historically congested the Union Station Rail Corridor.
