YELLOWKNIFE, NT — The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) announced that updated administrative fee and lending regulations under the Prosper NWT Act have officially taken legal effect across all territorial administrative regions.

Expanding Access to Capital for Northern and Indigenous Businesses

The modernized regulatory schedule eliminates upfront application and appraisal fees for commercial loans under $100,000, significantly lowering startup barriers for small-scale tourism operators, traditional arts cooperatives, and northern logistics enterprises in Level 2 and Level 3 non-market communities. The framework establishes specialized low-interest micro-credit windows for youth and women entrepreneurs across the Dehcho, Sahtu, and Beaufort Delta regions.

Industry, Tourism and Investment Minister Caitlin Cleveland affirmed that empowering local northern businesses builds economic self-reliance and supports vibrant territorial communities.

Northern Chamber of Commerce and Community Endorsements

The NWT Chamber of Commerce praised the elimination of upfront loan appraisal fees, noting that high lending transaction costs previously discouraged small village business incorporations.
