Ottawa Police Detain 17 Suspects in Multi-Store Retail Theft Crackdown Along Rideau Street

OTTAWA, ON — The Ottawa Police Service (OPS) Central District Neighbourhood Policing Team announced the conclusion of a high-intensity retail crime enforcement operation Saturday that resulted in 17 arrests and over 35 criminal charges along the commercial Rideau Street corridor.

Targeted Retail Theft Enforcement

The two-day initiative deployed undercover officers and uniform foot patrols across major retail centres and pharmacy outlets following repeated complaints regarding organized retail theft networks and brazen daytime shoplifting.

Police recovered approximately $14,500 in stolen commercial inventory, including designer cosmetics, electronic goods, and retail apparel. Outstanding arrest warrants were executed on nine individuals with prior property crime convictions.

Community and Merchant Collaboration

"Downtown Ottawa businesses and their frontline retail workers deserve a secure, safe working environment," said OPS Superintendent Mark Patterson. "We are working closely with the ByWard Market Business Improvement Area to maintain high-visibility foot patrols and deter repeat offenders."

Several apprehended individuals were also referred to municipal community court diversion programs and addiction outreach services.
