CHARLOTTETOWN, PE — The Prince Edward Island Department of Fisheries, Tourism, Sport and Culture unveiled a $6.5-million Harbour Climate Resilience Fund on Saturday morning, providing capital matching grants to local harbour authorities across the province.
The funding supports physical structural enhancements across fourteen small craft harbours, including North Rustico, Souris, Malpeque, and Beach Point. Key upgrades include raising timber wharf decks above projected high-water storm surge levels, reinforcing rock breakwaters, and installing marine-grade three-phase electrical hoists for offloading shellfish catch.
The initiative addresses vulnerabilities highlighted during recent post-tropical storms that inundated low-lying harbour facilities and damaged inshore fishing gear.
PEI's oyster, mussel, and autumn lobster fisheries support thousands of inshore harvesters and processing workers in rural coastal villages. The Harbour Climate Resilience Fund guarantees that harbour authorities can complete essential structural repairs before peak autumn harvesting and winter freeze-up.
The PEI Fishermen's Association (PEIFA) welcomed the provincial support, emphasizing that resilient wharves are fundamental to maintaining vessel safety and rural economic stability.
Harbour authorities can access immediate funding advances through the PEI Lending Agency, with marine construction contracts scheduled for execution throughout September and October.
