Premier Danielle Smith Allocates $200 Million for Industrial Clean Hydrogen Hubs in Edmonton and Calgary

EDMONTON — Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and Minister of Environment and Protected Areas Rebecca Schulz announced on Monday the distribution of $200 million in provincial capital grants from the Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (TIER) fund to construct four commercial clean hydrogen generation facilities and a network of high-pressure commercial heavy-haul truck fueling stations along the Queen Elizabeth II Highway corridor.

The investment supports the Edmonton Hydrogen Hub and the Calgary Industrial Clean Energy Cluster, positioning Alberta to become one of the lowest-cost producers of clean hydrogen fuel in the world by leveraging its abundant natural gas reserves and deep-well carbon capture and storage (CCS) geology.

Decarbonizing Heavy Commercial Freight and Industrial Heat Heavy-duty freight trucks traveling between Calgary and Edmonton account for a significant portion of provincial transportation emissions, where extreme sub-zero winter temperatures make battery-electric commercial semi-trucks less practical for heavy long-distance freight.

"Alberta is an energy superpower, and we are leading the development of next-generation clean hydrogen technology," Premier Danielle Smith said in Strathcona County. "By utilizing our natural gas resources paired with world-class carbon capture, we can produce clean hydrogen at a fraction of the cost of global competitors. This $200 million investment will power heavy freight trucks between Calgary and Edmonton, cut industrial emissions, and attract billions in global chemical manufacturing capital."

Hydrogen Hub Project Allocations Funded projects include:

• Strathcona Industrial Hydrogen Production Complex: $85 million for an advanced auto-thermal reforming facility equipped with 95 percent carbon capture.
• Highway 2 Hydrogen Fueling Network: $45 million to construct four high-pressure 700-bar commercial hydrogen dispensing stations in Edmonton, Red Deer, Airdrie, and Calgary.
• Calgary Industrial Heat Pilot: $40 million to blend up to 15 percent hydrogen into industrial heating grids.
• Heavy-Duty Truck Conversion Fleet: $30 million in vouchers for commercial fleet operators purchasing hydrogen fuel-cell semi-trucks.

Energy industry executives and municipal leaders commended the province's proactive industrial strategy, noting that developing commercial hydrogen infrastructure establishes Alberta as a premier exporter of clean fuel to North American and Asian markets.
