Premier Doug Ford Directs $420 Million for Bradford Bypass Eco-Bridges and Wetland Crossings

BRADFORD, Ont. — Premier Doug Ford and Minister of Transportation Prabmeet Sarkaria announced on Monday the awarding of a $420 million infrastructure contract to construct three specialized vegetated wildlife eco-bridges, elevated roadway causeways, and subterranean amphibian tunnels along the planned 16.2-kilometer Bradford Bypass corridor connecting Highway 400 in Simcoe County to Highway 404 in York Region.

The project incorporates comprehensive environmental mitigation architecture into the four-lane highway design, addressing environmental concerns regarding habitat fragmentation across the Holland River wetland ecosystem while alleviating severe regional gridlock on local municipal roads.

Ecological Engineering for the Holland Marsh Corridor The $420 million contract finances:

• 3 Vegetated Wildlife Eco-Bridges: Engineered overpasses featuring native coniferous tree canopies, thick brush plantings, and acoustic sound barriers designed to facilitate safe crossings for large mammals and local wildlife.
• 4.2 Kilometers of Elevated Wetland Causeway: Replacing standard earthen highway berms with elevated bridge pilings to maintain natural groundwater movement through the Holland River floodplain.
• 28 Subterranean Micro-Culverts & Exclusion Fencing: Specialized climate-controlled tunnels designed specifically for Blanding's turtles, salamanders, and small mammals.

"Our government is getting it done for drivers across York Region and Simcoe County by building the Bradford Bypass, cutting down on gridlock, and keeping goods moving across our economy," Premier Doug Ford said during an announcement in Bradford. "By investing $420 million in world-class wildlife overpasses and elevated wetland causeways, we are protecting our natural environment, safeguarding local wildlife, and building a modern highway that serves generations of Ontarians."

Regional mayors, building trades unions, and trucking industry executives commended the contract award, pointing out that connecting Highway 400 to Highway 404 saves commercial transport carriers over 35 minutes per trip and removes thousands of heavy freight trucks from local downtown streets in Bradford and East Gwillimbury.
