Premier Scott Moe Weighs Provincial Countermeasures Amid Escalating Cross-Border Agricultural Tariff Dispute

REGINA — Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe addressed mounting debate within the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday regarding the province's strategy in response to rising cross-border trade tensions, advocating for measured diplomatic engagement to protect the province's massive agricultural and potash export base.

While other Canadian provinces have enacted high-profile restrictions on US consumer imports, Moe emphasized that Saskatchewan's unique economic structure requires safeguarding critical north-south rail shipments of grain, pulses, uranium, and crop nutrients.

Prairie Agricultural Exposure Saskatchewan is Canada's top agricultural exporter, shipping billions of dollars in canola, wheat, and pulses across the US border annually. Furthermore, the province supplies a substantial portion of the potash fertilizer utilized by American midwestern corn and soybean farmers.

"Saskatchewan is an export powerhouse," Premier Moe told reporters at the Legislative Building in Regina. "One in six jobs in this province relies directly on trade. When tensions arise with our largest trading partner, our objective must be de-escalation and protecting market access for our farm families, not entering a race to the bottom that harms our own producers."

Legislative Clash Over Strategy Opposition MLAs challenged the government's approach, arguing that without collective provincial retaliation, Western Canadian industries could be singled out in bilateral negotiations.

In response, Premier Moe announced the creation of the Saskatchewan Trade Defense Panel, comprising leaders from the Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association, Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan (APAS), and mining executives to monitor border freight flows and provide real-time policy recommendations.
