Surveillance Footage Captures Arsonist Targeting Vehicles at Scarborough MP's Residence

The Toronto Police Service has released surveillance footage documenting an arson attack that occurred early Wednesday morning at the Scarborough residence of Liberal MP Salma Zahid. The video depicts a lone, masked, and hooded individual systematically pouring fuel onto five vehicles parked in the driveway before igniting the blaze.

According to the footage, the suspect emptied a red gas can across the front of the vehicles. Upon setting the first fire, the suspect recoiled as flames spread toward the container. The individual then utilized the burning canister to ignite a second vehicle before abandoning the container in the driveway and fleeing the scene. While the incident resulted in the total destruction of two vehicles, Zahid confirmed that no damage was sustained by the residence itself and that all occupants remained safe.

Zahid, who serves as the Member of Parliament for Scarborough Centre-Don Valley East, has publicly addressed the incident, expressing relief that the physical harm was limited to property. The investigation is currently ongoing as authorities work to identify the suspect captured in the video.

Prime Minister Mark Carney condemned the incident, describing the fire as a “cowardly act of violence and intimidation.” The release of the surveillance footage serves as a formal appeal by law enforcement for members of the public to come forward with any information that may assist in identifying the individual responsible for the destruction of the vehicles.
