UN Human Rights Office Demands Unrestricted Humanitarian Access for Sudan Famine Zones

GENEVA, SWITZERLAND — The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) issued an urgent international declaration Friday morning, demanding that the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces immediately remove administrative and military checkpoints blocking life-saving humanitarian convoys into famine-declared zones across North Darfur and South Kordofan.

International Humanitarian Law and Famine Crisis

UN High Commissioner Volker Türk emphasized that deliberately denying humanitarian access and targeting aid workers constitutes a war crime under the Geneva Conventions and Rome Statute. With acute famine conditions confirmed in displacement camps around El Fasher affecting over 750,000 civilians, the UN called for the permanent reopening of the Adré border corridor from Chad and the implementation of localized humanitarian pauses to allow food, medicine, and clean water purification tablets to reach trapped populations.

Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly reiterated Canada’s call for immediate, unhindered humanitarian access, pointing out that Canada’s newly announced $40 million aid commitment must reach civilians without obstruction.
