Vancouver Police Department and Vancouver Coastal Health add dedicated psychiatric nurse and officer mobile response teams.
VANCOUVER, B.C. — Mayor Ken Sim announced the full operational expansion of paired mental health crisis units across Vancouver, deploying additional Car 87/88 vehicles to support individuals experiencing acute psychiatric crises.
The program pairs certified mental health nurses directly with trained police officers, de-escalating complex situations and connecting vulnerable individuals to supportive clinical care.
"Providing compassionate, specialized care on the front lines is critical for community safety and human dignity," Mayor Sim stated.
Health authorities reported a 35% reduction in emergency room hospitalizations since initial program rollout.
