White House Director of Legislative Affairs James Braid announces plans to step down in September to join the private sector following major fiscal and judicial confirmations.

WASHINGTON, DC — The White House announced Thursday morning that Director of Legislative Affairs James Braid will step down from his senior executive post in September to transition into the private sector, concluding a pivotal tenure coordinating congressional strategy for the Trump administration.
Braid, a veteran Capitol Hill operative who previously served in senior leadership roles for the House Freedom Caucus, managed administration negotiations through narrow congressional majorities, successfully securing floor passage for major supplemental appropriations, defense reauthorizations, and dozens of federal judicial and agency confirmations.
Chief of Staff Susie Wiles commended Braid’s strategic discipline, noting that his close relationships with conservative and moderate lawmakers were instrumental in maintaining party unity across contentious budget votes.
The departure comes as the administration prepares for a high-stakes legislative session in September, including government funding negotiations before the September 30 fiscal deadline and proposed supplemental border enforcement packages.
Senior administration officials confirmed that Deputy Legislative Director Stephen Sandora will serve as acting director while a permanent successor is vetted.
Braid will remain in his role through the first week of September to guide the administration’s legislative strategy as Congress reconvenes from the August recess.
