The White House confirms that Legislative Affairs Director James Braid will step down in September to enter the private sector following major congressional negotiations.

WASHINGTON, DC — The White House confirmed Wednesday night that James Braid, Director of the Office of Legislative Affairs, will depart his senior administration post in mid-September to transition to a private sector consultancy role.
Braid, a seasoned conservative strategist who previously served as a senior advisor in the House and Senate, has managed the administration’s congressional relations apparatus throughout the 119th Congress. He played a central role in coordinating floor strategies for major budget reconciliations, judicial nomination confirmations, and border enforcement authorizations.
White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles commended Braid’s leadership, noting his instrumental role in maintaining caucus discipline and managing bipartisan dialogues during high-stakes spending package deadlines.
His departure comes as Congress prepares to return from the August recess facing a critical October 1 government funding deadline. Deputy Legislative Affairs Director Alex Meyer has been tapped to serve as acting director to oversee negotiations on an upcoming stopgap continuing resolution (CR).
Congressional leaders on Capitol Hill acknowledged Braid's direct accessibility and operational discipline across complex committee markups.
The administration is expected to name a permanent successor prior to the formal start of the fall legislative session.
