WASHINGTON — Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm and the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) announced on Monday the distribution of $220 million in competitive federal research and demonstration grants under the OPEN 2026 program to engineer, fabricate, and field-test commercial deep-well geothermal drilling systems capable of operating at extreme temperatures exceeding 500 degrees Celsius and depths of six kilometers in dense crystalline basement rock.
The initiative, managed in partnership with leading geothermal drilling consortia and national laboratories, develops novel millimeter-wave plasma torch drillheads, polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) cutters, and high-temperature telemetry tools to reach superhot rock formations that produce ten times more power per well than conventional hydrothermal resources.
