City of Victoria and Lime Launch 400-Vehicle Public Electric Bike Share Program

VICTORIA, BC — The City of Victoria and micromobility operator Lime officially rolled out a municipal electric bike share program Friday morning, deploying a fleet of 400 custom-engineered e-bikes across 65 designated parking hubs in downtown Victoria, Vic West, and James Bay.

Micromobility Infrastructure and Municipal Partnership

The zero-emission transit fleet features Gen4 e-bikes equipped with automatic two-speed transmissions, lower centers of gravity, built-in turn signals, and geofenced speed controls that limit speeds to 15 km/h along pedestrian-heavy corridors like Government Street. Under the municipal operating agreement, Lime is responsible for daily fleet battery rebalancing, maintenance, and parking compliance, utilizing GPS mandatory parking zones to prevent sidewalk clutter.

Victoria Mayor Marianne Alto celebrated the launch at a community event in Vic West, stating that accessible electric bike transit provides residents and tourists with an affordable, climate-friendly alternative to personal motor vehicles.

Equity Pricing and Cycling Network Integration

The program includes discounted Lime Access passes offering 70 percent fare reductions for low-income residents and post-secondary students at the University of Victoria.

Cycling advocacy groups praised the launch, noting that Victoria’s extensive protected bike lane network makes the city ideally suited for shared micromobility.

Winter Operations Review

The pilot program will operate year-round, with Victoria City Council reviewing fleet utilization data and safety performance in spring 2027.
