Mayor Jyoti Gondek Allocates $75 Million for Calgary Stampede Park District Energy Microgrid

CALGARY — Mayor Jyoti Gondek and Calgary City Council approved a $75 million municipal clean energy infrastructure agreement on Monday, authorizing the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) and ENMAX to construct an integrated geothermal geo-exchange district heating network and a 5-megawatt rooftop solar photovoltaic microgrid across the newly expanded BMO Centre and surrounding Rivers District entertainment hub at Stampede Park.

The project drills 500 vertical geothermal boreholes 250 meters into subterranean bedrock beneath Stampede Park parking lots, circulating closed-loop thermal fluids to absorb summer heat and provide building warmth during extreme -35°C prairie winter cold snaps, eliminating fossil-fueled natural gas boiler heating across 1 million square feet of convention and event space.

Establishing Calgary as a Premier Global Hub for Sustainable Conventions Global conventions and international business exhibitions increasingly require certified net-zero event venues, where convention delegates and organizers scrutinize venue energy carbon footprints before booking multi-million-dollar conferences.

"Calgary is an energy city, and we are showing the world that we lead in every form of energy innovation," Mayor Jyoti Gondek said at the BMO Centre in Calgary. "The expansion of Stampede Park and the BMO Centre has put Calgary on the global convention map. This $75 million investment builds cutting-edge geothermal district energy and rooftop solar into Stampede Park, cutting thousands of tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions, lowering long-term operating costs, and attracting world-class international conventions to our city."

Microgrid Infrastructure Packages Funded The $75 million allocation finances:

• 500 Subterranean Geothermal Boreholes: Drilled to 250 meters depth with high-efficiency ground-source heat pump central chillers.
• 5-MW Rooftop Solar Photovoltaic Array: Installing 11,000 bifacial solar panels across the BMO Centre's sweeping curved roofline.
• 10-MWh Stationary Battery Energy Storage System: Buffering electrical demand during major Calgary Stampede rodeo events and concerts.

Tourism Calgary executives, Calgary Stampede board directors, and construction labor unions praised the municipal council's approval, highlighting that district energy microgrids lower operating costs while establishing Calgary as a global leader in sustainable urban infrastructure.
