Governor Greg Abbott Directs $175 Million for Texas Wildfire Containment Aircraft and Firebreaks

AMARILLO, Texas — Governor Greg Abbott and Texas A&M Forest Service Director Al Davis announced on Monday the distribution of $175 million in state emergency preparedness capital from the Disaster Recovery Fund to procure five amphibious water-scooping firefighting air tankers, deploy specialized tracked bulldozer strike teams, and construct 800 miles of mechanical fuelbreak corridors across the Texas Panhandle, West Texas, and the Hill Country.

The investment directly implements recommendations from the Panhandle Wildfire Investigative Committee following historic grass and brush wildfires that burned over 1 million acres of agricultural ranchland and destroyed hundreds of cattle herds.

Protecting Texas Ranchers and Agricultural Communities Dry winter cold fronts and sustained 60-mph winds across the Texas plains can drive grassland wildfire fronts at speeds exceeding 15 miles per hour, outpacing ground-based fire engines and requiring immediate heavy aerial retardant drops.

"The brave ranchers, farmers, and rural families of the Texas Panhandle faced unimaginable devastation from historic wildfires, and Texas is ensuring our firefighters have the modern equipment needed to crush wildfires before they spread," Governor Abbott said during an announcement at Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport. "This $175 million investment equips the Texas A&M Forest Service with dedicated aerial water-scoopers, builds 800 miles of defensive firebreaks, and provides direct support to our volunteer fire departments who defend our state on the frontlines."

Wildfire Containment Deployments The $175 million funding allocation includes:

• Five Amphibious Air Tankers: Procuring custom-built air-tractor water-scoopers capable of dropping 1,600 gallons of water and retardant every six minutes.
• 800 Miles of Panhandle Mechanical Firebreaks: Clearing vegetation buffers along highway rights-of-way and ranch perimeters to starve fires of fuel.
• Volunteer Firefighter Equipment Grants: $45 million providing rural volunteer departments with heavy-duty brush trucks, thermal imaging cameras, and fire-resistant personal protective gear.

County judges, cattle raisers associations, and volunteer fire chiefs commended the governor's targeted funding, highlighting that dedicated aerial firefighting assets drastically reduce response times in rural counties.
