CEO Scott Kirby detailed operational strategies integrating machine-learning flight trajectory software and expanded Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) supply contracts across global hubs.
CHICAGO, IL — United Airlines Chief Executive Officer Scott Kirby outlined the carrier's long-term operational and environmental strategy during an extensive executive leadership address on Sunday, highlighting major investments in artificial intelligence-powered flight routing and commercial-scale Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) procurement.
United has fully integrated an advanced machine-learning flight dispatch platform across its Network Operations Center in Chicago. The system analyzes real-time oceanic jet stream winds, convective storm cells, and FAA air traffic airspace restrictions to compute optimized flight trajectories, reducing average transcontinental flight times by six minutes and cutting fleet fuel burn by over 45 million gallons annually.
"Technology allows us to run a more punctual, reliable airline while directly lowering operational carbon emissions," Kirby stated during the broadcast interview.
Kirby also confirmed that United has expanded commercial offtake contracts with domestic biofuel refiners to procure over 150 million gallons of neat SAF through 2028. The renewable kerosene, produced from agricultural residues and non-edible plant oils, reduces lifecycle lifecycle aviation emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional petroleum Jet A fuel.
Aviation analysts noted that expanding commercial SAF production is critical to meeting international civil aviation decarbonization mandates, though domestic refiners face cost hurdles in scaling commercial output.
United will continue taking delivery of new fuel-efficient Boeing 737 MAX and Airbus A321neo aircraft throughout late 2026, replacing older narrowbody planes across domestic hub routes.
