VA Awards $600 Million in Grants to End Veteran Homelessness and Fund Permanent Supportive Housing

WASHINGTON, DC — The United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced the award of $600 million in competitive grant funding through the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program, delivering direct capital to 240 non-profit community organizations across all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.

Providing Rapid Rehousing and Homelessness Prevention for Military Veterans

The federal investments fund emergency rental assistance, security deposit subsidies, utility payments, and specialized legal assistance to rapidly transition 120,000 homeless or at-risk veterans and their families into permanent supportive housing. The grant program pairs housing subsidies with dedicated VA clinical caseworkers to provide substance use treatment, vocational job placement, and PTSD counseling.

VA Secretary Denis McDonough affirmed that no service member who wore the uniform of the United States should ever face life on the streets, emphasizing that permanent supportive housing provides the foundation for dignity and recovery.

Veterans Service Organizations Praise

Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) strongly commended the grant deployment, highlighting that SSVF has helped drive a 55% reduction in veteran homelessness over the past decade.

Community housing providers praised the flexible funding structure for covering emergency vehicle repairs to help veterans maintain employment.

Grant Period of Performance

SSVF grantee organizations will begin deploying the updated $600 million funding allocation on October 1, 2026.
