CAL FIRE Pre-Positions 24 Firefighting Strike Teams in Northern California Ahead of Dry Lightning Threat

REDDING, CA — The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) announced the strategic pre-positioning of 24 multi-engine wildland strike teams and aerial firefighting resources across Northern California on Sunday afternoon.

Meteorological Red Flag Conditions and Resource Allocation

The preemptive deployment responds to a Red Flag Warning issued by the National Weather Service for the southern Cascades, the Trinity Alps, and the northern Sierra Nevada. Forecasters predict an influx of upper-level subtropical monsoonal moisture will generate isolated high-base thunderstorms capable of producing hundreds of dry lightning strikes over parched forest canopies with minimal wetting rain.

CAL FIRE pre-positioned 120 wildland fire engines, 10 bulldozer teams, and eight initial attack helicopter crews across regional air attack bases in Redding, Chico, and Grass Valley.

"When high-temperature timber fuel moistures are at seasonal lows, a single dry lightning event can ignite multiple simultaneous spot fires," CAL FIRE leadership said in Redding. "Pre-positioning resources ensures we achieve rapid initial attack containment before fires can establish crown runs."

Interagency Coordination and Aerial Intelligence

CAL FIRE is coordinating with the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) and the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES), utilizing FireGuard satellite reconnaissance and night-vision infrared mapping aircraft to detect new ignitions within minutes of lightning strikes.

Local fire protection districts advised rural property owners to maintain 100 feet of defensible space around structures and clear pine needles from residential gutters.

Operational Readiness

Pre-positioned firefighting teams will maintain 24-hour immediate dispatch standby status through Wednesday evening.
