RICHMOND, BC — A rare and violent thunderstorm carrying subtropical moisture swept across British Columbia's South Coast overnight into Sunday morning, forcing a six-hour shutdown of ground ramp operations at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) and causing widespread electrical outages.

Airport Gridlock and Aviation Safety

Environment Canada recorded over 800 lightning strikes across Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley between 9:00 p.m. Saturday and 3:00 a.m. Sunday. Airport safety protocols mandated the suspension of outdoor ground fueling, baggage handling, and aircraft towing, stranding dozens of incoming international flights on taxiways unable to deplane passengers.

YVR officials reported that while runways reopened before dawn, rolling schedule delays and aircrew duty-time expirations will impact over 120 domestic and international departures throughout Sunday.
