TORONTO, ON — Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) invoked its statutory mandate on Sunday morning to investigate the fatal shooting of a 26-year-old man by Toronto Police Service officers during an interaction near Yonge and Dundas streets.
According to preliminary reports released by the SIU, uniformed 52 Division officers were dispatched to a reported disturbance involving an armed individual at approximately 1:30 a.m. Sunday. During the encounter on Victoria Street, officers discharged service firearms, striking the individual. Emergency medical personnel transported the man to St. Michael's Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
The SIU has designated two subject officers and six witness officers, securing body-worn camera footage, conducted energy weapons, and nearby commercial surveillance recordings.
