Transport Minister Anita Anand Directs $290 Million for Canadian Arctic Deepwater Port and Ice Telemetry

IQALUIT, Nunavut — Minister of Transport Anita Anand announced on Monday the distribution of $290 million in federal trade and maritime infrastructure capital through the National Trade Corridors Fund (NTCF) to construct deepwater commercial docking wharves, community cargo staging yards, and automated satellite Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) sea-ice navigation telemetry systems in Iqaluit and Qikiqtarjuaq, Nunavut.

The investment, delivered in direct co-management partnership with the Qikiqtani Inuit Association and the Government of Nunavut, constructs permanent marine mooring infrastructure that allows deep-draft commercial resupply ships and Canadian Coast Guard icebreakers to dock directly alongside port piers rather than relying on slow, weather-vulnerable beach barge lightering.

Lowering Northern Living Costs and Bolstering Arctic Maritime Sovereignty Remote Nunavut communities rely entirely on summer maritime sealifts for building supplies, non-perishable groceries, and heavy machinery, where lack of modern port docks previously drove cargo shipping costs to record highs and created severe resupply delays.

"The Canadian Arctic is fundamental to our national identity, economic security, and northern sovereignty, and our government is building the critical maritime infrastructure northern communities need," Minister Anita Anand said in Iqaluit. "This $290 million investment constructs modern deepwater port wharves, cuts the cost of shipping groceries and essential goods to northern families, creates good jobs for Inuit workers, and ensures safe, dependable marine navigation across our Arctic waters."

Arctic Infrastructure Packages Funded The $290 million package finances:

• Qikiqtarjuaq Deepwater Port Wharf: $140 million for concrete-armored deepwater docking piers supporting commercial fishing trawlers and cargo vessels.
• Iqaluit Marine Terminal Expansion: $85 million for cargo container staging yards and automated crane offloading bays.
• Real-Time Satellite Ice Telemetry Feeds: $35 million partnering with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) to transmit high-resolution radar sea-ice maps to ships in real-time.
• Marine Spill Response & Emergency Bunkering: $30 million for specialized Arctic oil containment booms and emergency marine fuel reserves.

Inuit community leaders, northern commercial shipping companies, and Arctic research scientists praised the federal funding, emphasizing that deepwater ports provide vital economic independence and food security for northern communities.
